Maine Inspiration: Q+A with Kimberly Curry

I'm so excited to introduce Kimberly Curry as my first Found and Flowered contributor/collaborator!

I met Kimberly via a friend while taking a class on - you guessed it - paper arts. The class was called, Collage: Found Objects, Attachments, and Surface Design with Crystal Cawley at MECA (Maine College of Art and Design).

Kimberly is a talented artist of many mediums and doesn't shy away from new techniques and materials. She is a founding member and treasurer of New England Wax, - a group of artists across New England who work in both encaustic paint (hot wax) and cold wax mediums.

In addition to visual arts, Kimberly writes both for work and for New England Wax, and, as she stated, just to stay sharp! That got us going on a whole tangent about the old saying, "Use it or lose it!"

For the September edition of Found and Flowered, Kimberly is contributing an inspiring article about her creative process - I think you'll find some great advice and motivation to open up your journal and dive in.

For more on Kimberly, please visit her website or instagram and take a look at a fun Q+A below!

Q + A with Kimberly

Go-to color palette? Colors I think of as the “colors of Acadia” in Maine - purples, blues, and greens.

Favorite flower? Marigolds - "I am only a recent lover of marigolds. I have grown to love them as I have gotten older. I love them for these reasons - they are bright, hardy, prolific, and robust. They last from spring to fall. They are cheap and you can get a pack of six unremarkable seedlings for a few bucks. By the end of the summer, you would think you were a master gardener with the explosion of bold colors. I love it! I am not much of a gardener, but we bought a home in 2020 (yes, during covid!) and it was my first real stab at having my own yard to plant things in. It has been a learning curve as I figure out what grows, what doesn’t and what the squirrels and groundhogs dig up!"

Last book you loved or are currently reading? The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

A song or type of music on your creativity playlist? Usually it is an audio book or podcast

Materials or tools you can’t live without? Sharp Exacto knife and a burnisher

Favorite type of journal to work in? (and how many journals do you have going right now? ) Goodness! Okay, my favorite would be a cheap 5”x7” spiral bound black notebook. I can slide a juicy pen in the spiral binder and pop it in my bag. I have some dreamy journals by Handbook Company.

They have a closure strap and pocket in the back. I am always afraid I will “ruin” it. Once, I bought one specifically to ruin. It is now filled with 10-minute prompts and it so fun to explore!

An easy way you get started? Schedule a time and tell everyone I am busy at that time. Then I will do quick prompts of sketching or collage.

Place you usually create? My studio in my home.

Themes or ideas inspiring you right now? Simple shapes in bold colors with a twist of nostalgia

Personal mantra or often revisited quote? Don’t let perfect get in the way of good.
