Plus, 6 made-up rules that held me back from using my journal:

For a long time, I followed made-up journaling rules that ended up blocking my creative flow and style. These are the six I finally threw out:

  1. Finish one journal before starting another. I have an embarrassing number of unfinished journals (I bet you do, too) - and I still start new ones. And that’s ok.

  2. Finish a page before moving on. Half-done pages can become ready-made starting points for the next journal session. You can jump around in your journal - it’s ok.

  3. Only use junk in a junk journal. Junk means something different to everyone! It’s ok to mix your treasured special papers with your junk.

  4. Keep everything in chronological order. Trying to keep order just led to piles of memories that never got used. Now, I use them when I’m inspired, and it’s ok if things are out of order.

  5. Every page needs a theme. Some pages end up being just colors and shapes that look nice together. It’s ok to not document a memory or event on a page.

  6. Use one style per journal. It’s ok to have a scrapbook page, then an abstract page, then a page of writing and reflection, then a junk journal page, then a…. you get the idea.

Use your journal however inspires you!
